When reporting a problem, telling us roughly when it happened, whether you were in on-device or cloud mode, and what kind of content it was (podcast / web article / text / audio file) helps us a lot.
Frequently asked questions
Translation is stuck, or asks me to download a language pack
On-device translation needs Apple's language packs, and each language you use has to be downloaded once. The first-run walkthrough triggers the system download prompt; if you skipped it, or switched to a new language direction, download the language under iOS Settings → Translate → Downloaded Languages (this app supports Simplified Chinese, English, French and Spanish). It needs a network connection once; after that translation works offline.
The spoken voice sounds robotic
The app uses the system voice for your target language. The default quality is basic — an Enhanced or Premium voice sounds much better: Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices, pick your target language, then download one marked Enhanced or Premium. The app picks it up automatically. Switching translation direction means downloading a voice for the new target language too.
Why do podcasts require cloud mode?
Podcasts are long, and on-device transcription of them is slow and battery-hungry, so podcast conversion always runs in the cloud and consumes minutes. Text, web articles and local audio files can still be processed entirely on-device, offline and free.
Which languages are supported?
Simplified Chinese, English, French and Spanish — any pair, 12 directions in total. Chinese is always Simplified Chinese / Mandarin; Traditional Chinese and Cantonese are not supported, and there is no automatic language detection, so you pick the source and target explicitly.
How are minutes counted?
- Metered by the audio duration of what you submit, and only for cloud processing.
- The same account is charged only once for the same episode; reopening or retrying it does not deduct minutes again.
- Purchased minutes never expire.
- Your balance is shown on the account / top-up screen.
My purchase hasn't been credited
Minutes are credited after the server verifies the transaction. If the network was poor at the time, the transaction stays on the device and is submitted automatically next time you open the app online — usually nothing to do. If it is still missing after a day, forward us your App Store receipt email with the approximate purchase time.
Minute packs are consumables, which Apple does not support "restoring" — spent minutes are not re-granted, but transactions that never got credited are retried automatically as described above.
Does conversion stop if I leave the app?
Not immediately. The app requests background time and usually finishes short and medium content. Longer jobs are recorded as pending and resumed when the system grants background processing time; anything that cannot finish in the background continues when you reopen the app. You get a local notification when it's done.
I'm not getting new-episode alerts for podcasts I follow
New-episode checks run locally and rely on iOS Background App Refresh. Make sure Settings → General → Background App Refresh is on and notifications are allowed for TransUtter. Alerts never convert automatically — you confirm first, so no minutes are spent without you.
How do I delete my account?
From Settings inside the app. Your sign-in credential is deleted and the account can no longer be used; unused minutes are not refunded. See the Privacy Policy.
Odd markers like "[Music]" appear in the result
Those are the speech model's annotations for non-speech audio. Current versions filter them out; if you still see them in an older saved result, delete that entry and convert it again.
